Eucharistic Ministers

In every celebration of the Eucharist, the guidelines of the church are that every celebration of Holy Communion should have sufficient ministers, so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner.

When there are not sufficient ordinary ministers of the Eucharist, such as bishops, priests and deacons, the pastor or priests may appointed lay ministers, for a single occasion or for a certain amount of time. At Saint Alphonsus, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist are appointed by the pastor for a three-year term, which can be renewed. These ministers are trained as to how to carry out this ministry. Ministers are scheduled in advance, honoring Mass preferences. Ministers are also appointed to bring the Eucharist to the homebound and the sick.

To serve as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, a person must be a practicing Catholic and in good standing with the church.

Those interested in becoming an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist for weekends or to the sick should call the Church Office at 225-261-4650 and speak to Fr. Jason Palermo.
